I think the concept of cleaning windows with newspaper can be in large part traced back to and blamed on Readers Digest. A magazine that condensed articles that often originated from a published book into a "bite-sized" article.
My mother, along with millions of other readers naturally embraced the shortened perspective on life that Readers Digest become iconic for.
Using a newspaper to clean your windows with was only one example of a long list of bad ideas propagated by Readers Digest. Hence the popular idiom of what we call "the Readers Digest Version". The problem is that when you follow shortened answers, you typically get short results.
The real answers always lay within the deeper details. Windows are everywhere. The ability to see through a clean window is a refreshing and wanted moment. But rarely can windows be found to be streak free or smudge free. The challenge to produce streak free windows is both real and significant. And there seems to be no shortage of people providing window cleaning tips that simply don't work, to window cleaning tips that actually make a bigger mess!
Whether you want clean windows in your house or clean windows in your car, there actually is a far better way to clean windows than using newspaper, that will not only provide superior results, but do so with far less aggravation. Being a professional detailer for over 30 years has always provided endless challenges. From polishing black car paint to perfection, to removing pet hair from the car.
But no challenge seem to persist like the challenge of cleaning windows. I was forever trying the next best window cleaner and the next best window cleaning technique only to find myself rendered disappointed yet again! Until I happened upon a product that wasn't an actual window cleaner, but a product that was developed for an entirely different use. I learned first hand from the formulator that the spray detailer he developed also had amazing secondary uses, and cleaning windows was one of them.
Darren's Tips: Unlike traditional glass cleaners and window cleaning techniques, this method will in fact require the use of 2 liquid products and 2 types of micro-fiber cloths. Immediately this will likely seem like a poor alternative to traditional window cleaning steps that require only one cloth and one window cleaning product. Just know that this will not only produce the best results you have seen, but does not have to be repeated every time you clean your windows moving forward.
This technique will not only do the heavy lifting to restore your windows to a streak free and smudge free view, but lay the foundation moving forward. Think of this as the "repair" process, and then moving forward you can default to the "maintenance" process. To maintain your windows moving forward requires less of everything. Simply use the waffle weave micro-fiber cloth and distilled water as your window cleaner. Choosing the right type of newspaper you can clean your windows efficiently.
Otherwise the ink may run and leave smears on the glass making the cleaning ineffective. Those newspapers that have petroleum-based ink can create smears and stains when you wet them.
Newspapers printed in soy ink are an excellent option for cleaning windows. This type of ink has many advantages. For this reason soy ink is ideal for label printing. One way to find out whether the ink type of your newspaper is soy-based is to look for a special soy ink seal. Another way to learn the ink type is to test it. Hold a newspaper page between your index finger and your thumb. Do this for about a minute or longer. After doing this if your fingers are stained, this means that the newspaper is printed in petroleum-based ink.
Newspapers printed in soy ink are the best option for window cleaning. Pick up a soft type of newspaper for your cleaning needs. If you choose to clean with newspaper , you should prepare a cleaning solution to achieve perfect cleaning result. Use a spray bottle and fill it with the mixture. As you may already know, vinegar solution have great cleaning properties when it comes to window cleaning.
Spray the window you want to clean and use a newspaper. Clean with a newspaper in the same way as you will with a standard towel or rag. Paper towels are convenient household items for cleaning different types of dirt and smears, but they are more expensive than newspaper. Also, cleaning towels that are made of paper have jagged fibers. This fact makes them perfect for absorbing liquids. It can also leave ink on your hands, although with the switch to water-based inks and more absorbent newsprint, there's less transference these days.
What is it about a newspaper that makes it an effective household tool? Some muse that it's all in the ink. Theories include that the old petroleum-based ink had a grit comparable to a light sandpaper, and others believe that the solvents used to make the older inks were effective cleaners. Of course, the paper itself has a somewhat gritty texture that's helpful in cutting through dust and dirt.
It's been rumored that newsprint is a cousin to paper towels, and actually, this theory is probably the most scientifically close to why newspaper is effective at cleaning. Many papers, like the ones you find in magazines, have a material added -- called sizing, if you were wondering -- to make it more water-repellent. But newsprint has little to no sizing, leaving it super absorbent so it can hold onto the ink that gets printed on it.
The high absorbency of the newsprint is likely what makes it so effective at cleaning windows. It actually absorbs the liquid instead of just pushing it around.
